From July 5-7, 2023, Hanoi, Vietnam, became the virtual reality hub for environmental education as the Sustainability Issues and Metaverse for Building Participatory Learning Environments (SIMPLE) project held its inaugural kick-off meeting. The three-day event brought together a diverse team of experts from the project’s main partners: French Institut of Research for Development (IRD), Can Tho University (CTU), and National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) along with ASSIST in charge of the project’s communication, Virtuallyz – the project’s technical consultant and external stakeholders who are members of the Advisory Board.
Pedagogical experts, technology gurus, scientists, and project management specialists from across the globe united under the SIMPLE banner, each bringing their unique skills and passion to the table.
Bridging the Gap through Virtual Worlds:

SIMPLE’s ambitious goal is to develop a network of interconnected 3D virtual universes (VUs) designed to raise environmental awareness among young audiences in the Lower Mekong countries. These immersive virtual worlds will tackle specific environmental challenges in each participating nation, from waste management to water pollution.
While these VUs will be tailored to local contexts, they will share a common technological and pedagogical foundation, ensuring consistency and scalability across borders. This innovative approach aims to bridge the gap between scientists, educators, young citizens, civil society organizations, and local authorities, fostering collaboration and driving positive change.
A Four-Year Journey Begins:
With a project lifespan of four years, the SIMPLE team has hit the ground running. The kick-off meeting served as a platform for team members to get acquainted, brainstorm ideas, and set the stage for future milestones. In addition to collaborative workshops and presentations, the final day saw the convening of an Advisory Board to provide strategic guidance and ensure the project’s success.
The SIMPLE project’s impact extends beyond the walls of the conference room. By leveraging the power of virtual reality, it aims to engage young minds in real-world environmental issues, equip them with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and empower them to become active changemakers in their communities.
Stay Tuned for Virtual Adventures:
With the kick-off meeting successfully concluded, SIMPLE is now poised to embark on its exciting journey. To stay updated on the project’s progress, be sure to follow their page for regular updates and insights. Witness the development of the VUs, learn about student experiences and research breakthroughs, and let yourself be inspired by the transformative power of VR in education.
The SIMPLE project’s kickoff meeting marks a significant step forward in the fight for a more sustainable future. By harnessing the power of technology and collaboration, SIMPLE is paving the way for a generation of environmentally conscious and empowered youth, ready to tackle the challenges facing the Lower Mekong region and beyond.
