Cambodia: 1st Co-Construction Workshop to develop a VR game on biodiversity ecosystems in the rice field

05/12/2025

On 10–11 November 2025, the SIMPLE project held a co-construction workshop at the Innovation Center of the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT). The session brought together educators and technical experts to refine the upcoming Virtual Reality (VR) Game and learning unit in Cambodia, targeting Grade 10 students in both technical and general high schools.

The module should also be integrated into the vocational training curriculum on Food Processing, allowing students to tackle the subject of Agroecological Crop Protection (ACP).

VR Game with activities about ACP

The finalized structure will include three VR activities followed by non-VR classroom sessions that support a holistic understanding of sustainable agricultural practices. The game will be divided into the following sessions:

  • Part 1 has students observing and identifying animals in rice fields;
  • Part 2 focuses on having students identifying rice pests and understanding their impacts;
  • Part 3 helps students in recognizing natural enemies that support controlling pests

Pedagogical objectives

The pedagogical objectives developed during the workshop focus on helping students explore rice fields as dynamic, interconnected ecosystems while deepening their comprehensive understanding of agroecological principles. Through immersive learning in VR, students are encouraged to observe the rich biodiversity found in these environments, identify the major threats they face, and strengthen their critical thinking and collaboration skills. Ultimately, the objectives aim to show how ACP can support more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.

Next steps

In the coming months, CADT, with the support of the SIMPLE team, will continue working on the game design, create VR game prototypes, and develop the learning scenario to offer students an immersive learning experience.
