22/10/2023

Raising Environmental Awareness through Innovation

On October 21st, during her official visit to Thailand, Sylvie Retailleau, the French Minister for Higher Education and Research, experienced a revolutionary approach to environmental education at the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). The SIMPLE project team showcased its immersive virtual universes (VUs), designed to engage young audiences and bridge the gap between stakeholders in environmental issues across the Lower Mekong countries.

Stepping into a Sustainable Future:

Arthur Brugière, Technology Development Officer, Alexis Drogoul, Project Team Leader, and Nghi Quang Huynh, Project Manager for Can Tho University, along with the NSTDA project team, proudly presented their vision for utilizing VUs as powerful educational tools. Minister Retailleau and her delegation, along with NSTDA President M. Sukit Limpijumnong, were invited to step into these virtual worlds, gaining firsthand experience of their potential to spark learning and engagement.

Minister Retailleau’s willingness to explore the VR experience further solidified the project’s impact. Stepping into the virtual world sent a strong message about the importance of embracing innovative solutions for environmental education. Her enthusiasm showcased the potential of this technology to captivate and inform diverse audiences, including policymakers, educators, and young citizens alike.

Collaboration Fosters Change:

The event represents a collaborative effort between French and Thai institutions, demonstrating the power of international partnerships in tackling shared environmental challenges. NSTDA’s involvement exemplifies the growing commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in the region. The SIMPLE project aims to develop a network of interconnected VUs, each focusing on a specific environmental challenge in a different Lower Mekong country. These virtual worlds will share a common technological and pedagogical foundation, ensuring consistency and scalability, while incorporating local contexts and case studies for each participating nation.

A Step Forward for Environmental Education:

The SIMPLE project’s demonstration during Minister Retailleau’s visit marks a significant step forward in utilizing virtual reality for environmental education purposes. By leveraging technology to engage young minds and promote cross-cultural collaboration, the project holds immense promise for shaping a more sustainable future for the Lower Mekong region.

This activity captures the essence of the SIMPLE project’s event participation, highlighting the project’s goals, showcasing the team’s achievements, and emphasizing the potential of VR technology for environmental education.
