Horizon Innovation 5.0 Forum: SIMPLE Project Showcases VR Waste Management Game

On October 17 and 18, 2023, the Horizon Innovation 5.0 Forum was held at Complex 01 in Hanoi, Vietnam on the theme of “Innovation for sustainable development“. The Forum was organized by the French Embassy in Vietnam and the French Institute in Vietnam to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Vietnam and was served as a vibrant platform for showcasing pioneering advancements in sustainable development. Among the event’s highlights was the participation of the SIMPLE project, which captivated audiences with its interactive approach to waste management education.

A Waste-Wise Future through Virtual Reality:

The SIMPLE project team proudly presented its flagship creation: RAC VR, a serious game designed to educate players about responsible waste management practices. This immersive virtual reality experience transports users to a fictional town grappling with waste disposal challenges. Through engaging gameplay, players learn valuable lessons about waste sorting, recycling, and composting, promoting sustainable habits in a fun and interactive way.

The Horizon Innovation 5.0 Forum provided the perfect stage for the first public demonstration of RAC VR. Project team members proudly guided eager participants through the game, showcasing its captivating graphics, intuitive controls, and educational content. The positive reception and enthusiastic engagement highlighted the game’s potential to revolutionize waste management education, particularly among younger generations.

Project Leader Champions Sustainable Solutions:

In addition to the RAC VR demonstration, the SIMPLE project team leader – Prof. Alexis Drogoul delivered a compelling presentation about the project’s broader goals and objectives. The presentation emphasized the importance of fostering innovative approaches to develop a coherent, persistent, multilingual set of 3D virtual universes (VUs) to raise the awareness of young audiences on environmental issues and bridge the gap between scientists, education experts, young citizens, CSOs and local authorities of the Lower Mekong countries.

Beyond the Forum:

The SIMPLE project’s journey continues beyond the Horizon Innovation 5.0 Forum. The team plans to further refine RAC VR based on user feedback and expand its reach to educational institutions and communities across Vietnam. RAC VR is a prototype game which is served as a base for the project team to develop different virtual universes for an innovative approach to raise awareness and inspire the young generations value environmental responsibility.

By leveraging technology and gamification, the project is paving the way for a more sustainable future, one virtual reality experience at a time.

Context SIMPLE is a project co-funded by the European Union that aims to explore the value of virtual reality (VR) in raising young people’s awareness of sustainable development challenges. The project is based on the design of teaching methods using combinations of serious games, scientific models and VR activities, conceived in cooperation with educational players in four countries (Cambodia, Vietnam, Lao PDR and Thailand). ÉVEIL Project Conducts School Visits Ahead of its Official Implementation
